Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name, Mark Twain, was America’s first great man of letters – and indeed, he remains among the greatest writers America has ever produced. He earned worldwide renown for Tom Sawyer and its sequel, Huckleberry Finn – adventure stories ostensibly for children but also admired and enjoyed by adults – for such memoirs and travelogues as Life on the Mississippi and The Innocents Abroad, and for such satirical works as the genial A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and the more sharply cynical Letters from the Earth (reports from Satan on the progress of God’s little “experiment,” a work too controversial to have been published in Twain’s lifetime).

Twain’s varied life experience, coupled with his keen wit and a deep sense of irony, make him of course eminently quotable. In Quotable Twain, longtime admirer David W. Barber brings together the best and most memorable of Twain’s pity expressions from a wide range of his writings, complete with an index for easy reference.
